I can sum up my views this way: No harm, no foul. That is, what harm does including the Oxford comma do? In many cases it helps clarify the meaning of the sentence. "But it's unnecessary," I hear many cry. In many cases that is true. My appendix is unnecessary as well, but I'm holding onto it until it starts to cause me harm, thank you very much.
In their original post announcing the death of the Oxford comma, GalleyCat mentioned the Vampire Weekend song "Oxford Comma." Not surprising, given that the writer admitted he "has always preferred to write without the Oxford comma," and that the song asks, "Who gives a fuck about an Oxford comma?" Perhaps he feels the song is some kind of anthem against unnecessary punctuation.
The video for the song is awesome (see below), and actually is relevant to this discussion. The video is one long tracking shot - that is, a long series of visual images. However, while the video is one long tracking shot, it is not one long scene. Rather, it's a series of only vaguely related vignettes. Those who feel the song is some kind of anthem against unnecessary punctuation, need to watch the video again. The series of vignettes are neatly divided by titles - even one (the epilogue)at the very end, after the singing has ended and the music is fading. Which when I think about it, seems very much like an Oxford comma.
